Our Methodology

SkillScope isn't a personality quiz — it's built on the same occupational data and psychological framework that professional career counselors have relied on for decades.

The 72-skill self-assessment

You rate 72 real workplace skills — grouped into 11 categories spanning technical, analytical, and interpersonal work — by how satisfying it would be to use each one often in your job. This isn't a list we invented; it reflects the kind of skill taxonomy used in occupational research to describe what different jobs actually demand day to day.

The Holland (RIASEC) personality model

Your free personality result is based on the Holland Occupational Themes (RIASEC) model — Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional — developed by psychologist John L. Holland and in continuous use in career counseling since the 1970s. It's one of the most widely studied and applied frameworks in vocational psychology, precisely because it maps cleanly onto how real occupations are structured.

O*NET occupational data

Your occupation matches draw on data from the O*NET database, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration — the same public, continuously-updated dataset that underlies most professional career-exploration tools in the United States. It's used here under O*NET's Creative Commons attribution license.

What this is — and isn't

This is a structured, data-grounded starting point for exploring careers that might genuinely fit how you like to work — not a replacement for a qualified career counselor's personalized guidance, and not a guarantee of job placement or career outcomes. Think of it as a well-informed first step, not the final word.
